Adobe Fireworks CS3 Kuler Panel Released
Alan from the Fireworks team at Adobe asked if I had plans to port the kuler panel for Flash CS3 to Fireworks CS3. I started crawling through the API today and thought it would be a pretty easy task. Fireworks supports Flash panels so I really only needed to rewrite some of the JSF code calls. So, for all of you Fireworks people out there, I ported the panel. I myself am not a huge Fireworks user so please download the panel and test it out. I haven't had any people test it on a Mac yet either. Please consider this beta until I start hearing about how well it works on your machines.
If you want to see a short and small video on the panel in action you can view a .mov here.
Download the panel MXP here.

Thanks! Looks awesome, but on the Mac I get an error saying:
"This extension requires the following products:
Fireworks CS3 9 or greater
The extension will not be installed."
Hope this helps!

This may be a dumb question but... You do have Fireworks CS3 right :)?
Let me know. Anyone else have problems? Thanks.

I installed it...I think but I can't find it. But then, I'm new to extensions.
It shows up in list when I select
Commands > Manage Extenstions
but it doesn't show up under
Window > Others
I downloaded the .zip file to my desktop, extracted the file, double-clicked, and accepted the disclaimer. I got a pop-up that the extension was installed. I restarted Fireworks, and...I can't find it.
I've tried clearing the checkbox to disable the extension, restarting, then checking the checkbox and restarting again.
I'm running Fireworks CS3 under Vista Home Premium.

You can see where to access it on the video - http://www.pixelfumes.com/blog/aug07/kulerFW.mov - basically it should be in the menu bar under windows > others > kuler.

Nice work, thanks!
My only request would be that you combine the MMExecute calls into one call so that the history panel only generates one item to undo.
And my other suggestion would be to use Fireworks more. ;-) Keep up the great work!

Installed and works without a problem for me on my Win XP machine.
I'm sure this will become very usefull. Thanks.
Am having great fun using it in conjunction with Aaron's Blend Paths panel.

hey ben, thanks for the awesome extension, i found out two things which might be a problem.
a. When selecting the palette and putting it on the canvas, it somewhat retains the previous fill color or type. For example, i drew a circle with an ellipse fill , then i use killer, chose a color scheme and dragged it into the canvas, all of the palette squares acquired the ellipse fill ? Why? Or in some cases, theres also a stroke outline or just a stroke ( when u used the stroke and fill before using kuler )
b. everytime u pick a color scheme and put it in the canvas, a sublayer has been created, ( the more u put palettes, the more sublayers are created ).
c.Is there any possible way, when u try to select an object , then pick a color from a colorscheme in kuler, it automatically changes the color of the object?

FYI, I still can't get this thing to install. I've tried 10 times now. The extension manager says its installed. Using Vista and Fireworks CS3.

I've used plenty of extensions for both Dreamweaver and Fireworks, but this Kuler extension, which the EM says is installed, does not show up under Windows/Others/. Using FWCS3 and Vista.

Rolinstone and others,
Thanks for participating in the beta process! I have only OSX and XP to test off of currently - apparently it is related to Vista. I will have to research the mxi packaging to see if there is a change I need to make.

Sarge,
It could also have something to do specifically with the 64-bit version of Vista I'm running. My CS3 suite is not in the "Program Files" folder. It is in a folder called "Program Files (x86)"

OK. I ran EM as administrator (right-click extension manager and "run as administrator) and the extension installed and operates perfectly. Thanks for this!

Rolinstone - that's great - but you haven't had a similar problem with other extensions? Strange... Glad it is working now - thanks for testing!

I did have the problem with the one other Fireworks extension I installed. But I just assumed that since it was from several versions ago, it just wasn't compatible with CS3. So now you've helped me with another extension as well. By the way, I do the newsletter for CommunityMX.com and included a link this week to both of your Kuler extensions.

Oh cool! Rolinstone has the answer. I went into my Adobe Extension Manager folder, ran the .exe as administrator from there and the extension showed as installed, but disabled. I checked the box, and it showed up in Fireworks! I didn't even have to uninstall and re-install! Thank you!

@Rolinstone - that did it! I tried playing with this with the actual mxp file, no go. So, to summarize what Rolinstone suggested: Start > Adobe > right click Adobe Extension Manager CS3 and choose Run as Administrator. Install the extension with the extension manager tool and bamm!

As to why this extension and not others have this issue, I think the fact the Fireworks installs extensions in Program Files where as Flash and Dreamweaver install in the User folder may be the problem.

This should be included in the next build of Fireworks. Nice job! It really complements the function of Fireworks in creating webcentric pages!

seems like i'm running the same version of cs3 as everyone else
I've ran EM as administrator and installed the extension...no go
I even remapped the extension to my documents and installed from there so I KNOW i have all the vista access right where I don't even have to run em as administrator
em shows kuler panel as correctly installed
doesn't show up in my window/other's menu

I couldn't get the kuler panel to run on vista at all even following the tips of all you other bloggers
The solution I found-
1. turn off user account control
2. restart the computer
3. install kuler using extension manager
taadaa
now my kuler panel works
thanks alot for this life changing extension;)

Great work on this extension. For those that missed it. In Vista you need to run the adobe extension manager as administrator so you can enable the kuler extension. Go to love vista! ;)

This is a great addition to Fireworks. It's too bad the Fireworks team doesn't do more progressive things such as this.

Has anyone resolved the "no results" message when opening the kuler panel?
I have installed the extension from the Extension Manager with admin rights. Panel shows under Window/Other and opens but does not connect to kuler. I'm running Vista Home Premium SP3 and Flash CS3 v1.0.0. The Flash extension installed the same way works fine so I do have a workaround.
